Sanchez: U.S. "Living a Nightmare"
Page 2

But Sanchez, later questioned at length by an audience primarily composed of national and regional journalists, reserved his harshest words for American leaders who chose to invade Iraq. While sidestepping the issue of whether the invasion was a mistake, he told the crowd that "partisan struggles have led to political decisions that endangered the lives of our sons and daughters on the battlefield.

"The unmistakable message was that political power had greater priority than our national security objectives," Sanchez said. "Overcoming this strategic failure is the first step toward achieving victory in Iraq. Without bipartisan cooperation we are doomed to fail. There is nothing going on today in Washington that would give us hope."

Just the third Hispanic to rise to three-star general in the Army when he replaced Lt. Gen. William Wallace on June 15, 2003, Sanchez has talked of a "failure of leadership" in previous speeches and conversations with journalists. He has yet to address his role in the Abu Ghraib scandal or directly blame the administration for bad decisions and missed opportunities in the run-up to the war and the occupation.

Sanchez said he did not realize how bad things were in Iraq until the day he took command. He is the highest-ranking former military leader yet to suggest the Bush administration has fallen short in Iraq.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. John Batiste, who led the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq, appeared in a TV spot accusing the president of pursuing "a failed strategy that is breaking our great Army."

Despite his criticism, Sanchez said the United States has no choice but to remain in Iraq, even though it is likely that American troops will be in the country another decade at least. He said it is imperative that politicians form a consensus to develop a cohesive political, economic and military strategy for winning in Iraq. Leaders in Washington, including those in Congress, "have been derelict in their duty," Sanchez said, also telling the crowd, "We continue our inept coalition management efforts and, in fact, we are facing ever-decreasing troop commitments by our military coalition partners."

Terrorists and insurgents in the region "are arguably more dangerous than any threat we faced in the 20th century," he said, but also made it clear that there is yet another enemy every bit as fatal - those on both sides of the aisle in Washington.

"America must demand a unified national strategy that goes well beyond partisan politics and places the common good above all else," Sanchez said. "Too often our politicians have chosen loyalty to their political party above loyalty to the Constitution because of their lust for power."

We feed the poor, We rebuild other countries, We our the worlds salvation, We open our borders, We do this, we do that, but you know what, we the people don't do shit, but bitch and be two faced about everything...They do, our brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, moms, dads and uncles.

They fight for us, they fight for others while We sit by and bitch, moan and complain about what, what We sent them there to do... (We the government), when was the last time We called you on the phone and said, hey " Were gonna do this" is that ok with you??? No voting does not count, because We controls that too, take the blinders off people... If our men and women of the US military are loosing their rights everyday what the hell do you think you are loosing???

There is no more we the people it is only the government using the word We to make you feel special and involved...

But We can beat US down in the media, in newspapers and broadcast it throught the whole fucking world that We do not support US.

There are over 1 million homeless vets, disabled vets, widows and children that have lost something very important to them, We do not give a shit about them...

My grandfather was a WWII vet, decorated, (purple heart) I might add, When I made the funeral arrangements for him, you know what I got from We...NOTHING as well as a million others... I got a generic letter from good ol Clinton, that was stamped not signed, NO FLAG, and no We to come out and pay their respects, oh and 239.00 for his time served...Want to know what We got in return... 25.00 for the fucking letter and if I wanted more letters to share with his loved ones it was 10.00 for every xtra letter I requested...

These soldiers have their own reasons for going to the service, because We said that their loved ones needed them for protection, because they love their families and their country...

Why can't We support them, love them, respect them and honor them and take care of them, why do We always turn our backs on US, the traitors and the haters of the world love to hear this shit on the news, how We don't even support US anymore.

One day We will be sorry when US turns their backs on them and says no more, US is tired, hungry, poor, homeless and hopeless, We build them up and send them out, US should let We fight for themselves until US gets what it deserves...

How can We be one nation when it is US that stand alone, this world has come to be what the enemy has wanted and what We don't give a shit about anymore, US has become divided against our own.

How can We let US feel that they and their brothers and sisters have died for nothing???

General Sanchez's comments would have been more helpful had they been made before he was safely retired. I find his time more reflective of poor leadership and less interest in the national interest than in his own self interest. Had Generals Patton and MacArthur still be around, Sanchez would have been broken down to parade rest and given a ticket home.

I need to slow down the typing or speed up my brain. The comment above should read:

General Sanchez's comments would have more meaning and would have been more helpful, if true, had they been made before he was safely retired. I find his timing more reflective of his poor leadership and his lesser interest in the welfare of the nation than his own legacy. Had Generals Patton and MacArthur still been around today, Sanchez would have been broken down to parade rest and given an involuntary ticket home.
