Page 1 of 2 When I started taking karate two years ago, the martial arts instantly became part of me. I found myself thinking about karate and mentally rehearing my kata's while driving, while cooking dinner, and even before drifting off to sleep each night. Everyone I know who is a student of the martial arts says that the martial arts become part of who you are. Karate becomes you.
Last year at this time I was testing for my green belt and contemplating how much time I would have to take off from karate in order to give birth and for post-partum recovery. I continued taking karate up until four weeks before I had my daughter. During those early infant months without karate, I was really missing my karate routine. Now I am just weeks away from my test for brown belt and karate has become an even bigger part of my life. I have doubled my time at the dojo, and have taken on an advanced class where I am usually the only student not yet a black belt. So, what happens when you add another obsession that takes up your thoughts and time? This is the question as I am about to embark on my second season of fantasy football. Last year I barely knew what fantasy football was; this year my husband and I are league commissioners. Last year, I thought fantasy football was something that only complete dorks participated in, and could never understand why my cousin was always talking about football. I learned that I was either very wrong about the whole "dork" thing, or else I was going to have to stand up and be proud to call myself a bona-fide dork. Before playing fantasy football I knew the basics of how to play, both from a brief stint with Powder Puff football and from a husband and his family who are obsessed with the Steelers. My loyalties were always with the team on the Eastern side of the state, the Eagles; and I knew some of the players.
